One of Ericsson's most innovative development teams is coming to Aachen. Ericsson Eurolab is one of Ericsson's largest research and development centers in Europe. Since the development of 2G, every single mobile communications standard has been significantly co-developed at the Herzogenrath site. With its project development on Prager Ring, Landmarken was able to convince Ericsson to relocate to Aachen. From the end of 2026, Eurolab will be the main user of the state-of-the-art new office building, occupying 5,500 of a total of 9,000 m² of office, research, and communal space.
"Ericsson Eurolab and the Aachen region are the professional and private home for 500 researchers from 40 countries. Over the past decades, we have played a decisive role in shaping the future of mobile communications and helped bring all important mobile standards from 2G to 5G to market," says Jan Peter Meyer-Kahlen, Vice President and Head of ICT Development Center Eurolab at Ericsson. "Now we are taking the next step and moving into a new, more sustainable building with state-of-the-art development laboratories and workspaces close to the city center."
Research and development center near RWTH
The employees develop global solutions for communication networks and work on the latest 5G and soon also 6G versions of mobile communications technologies, as well as in the application fields of Industry 4.0, transportation, and energy. It goes without saying that the proximity to RWTH Aachen University also played a role in the investment decision. "We have actually been in contact with Ericsson on and off for many years and are now delighted that our project on Prager Ring has contributed to this global player's decision to sign a long-term lease in Aachen," says Landmarken CEO Jens Kreiterling. The groundbreaking ceremony will take place in December.
Sustainable building for Ericsson
The new building, which is being constructed with regional expertise, features a solar power system and a spacious terrace on the green roof, pre-installed parking spaces for electric charging stations, and flexible floor plans. Numerous bicycle parking spaces as well as showers and changing rooms for bicycle commuters encourage people to leave their cars at home.
Designed by pbs architekten, the building will feature a large lobby and a green courtyard as meeting places. The work environments, which are excellently connected to public transportation, are aiming for LEED Gold certification for green building.
