From an abandoned industrial site to a vibrant neighborhood through a series of transformationsâthat is the story the C-Werk in Aachen is currently writing. The site is becoming a symbol of the transformation from an industrially dominated urban structure to a modern, sustainable business hub.
The former Continental plant in Aachen manufactured tires for the automotive industry until it closed at the end of 2022. Where approximately 1,800 employees once worked, more than 20 tenants now occupy space in the new C-Werk, including both industrial spaces and offices. Among them are startups, organizations, individuals, and established companies. These initial new uses mark the first chapter of the transformation: life is returning to the site, and new jobs are being created.
But this is just the beginning; things are moving full steam ahead: In close coordination with the city and its economic development agency, the transformation is being driven forwardâas part of a holistic neighborhood development plan for Aachen-Rothe Erde.
MAKING ROOM
In the northern part of the site, the first warehousesâwhich can no longer be used due to contaminationâare being demolished. Work will begin by the end of 2026, or early 2027 at the latest, to make room for manufacturing facilities.
BRINGING IT TO LIFE
Last year, the RĂTHE container village already set the tone; now itâs becoming a vibrant hub that draws people to the C-Werk with a diverse range of cultural and culinary offeringsâfeaturing a full summer of events.
ENTRANCE
The first renovation will focus on the C-Werk entrance. Building 28âas itâs officially knownâwill become a striking entrance area featuring offices, co-working spaces, and dining options. It will provide space for conferences, events, and studiosâa visible sign of a new beginning. The renovation application has been submitted.
CRAFT COURTYARDS
In response to a noticeably high demand, these are also being developed in the northern section. To this end, the existing structures there will be renovated; the building permit application for this has also already been submitted. This revitalization will create smaller hall spaces with office, communal, and ancillary areas.
