One thing after another: The transformation is unfolding in several phases

Landmarke No. 34

From an abandoned industrial site to a vibrant neighborhood through a series of transformations—that is the story the C-Werk in Aachen is currently writing. The site is becoming a symbol of the transition from an industrially dominated urban structure to a modern, sustainable business hub.

Until its closure at the end of 2022, the former Continental plant in Aachen manufactured tires for the automotive industry. Where some 1,800 employees once worked, more than 20 tenants now occupy space in the new C-Werk, including both industrial halls and offices. Among them are startups, associations, and individuals, as well as established companies. These initial new uses mark the first chapter of the transformation: life is returning to the site, and new jobs are being created.

But this is only the beginning; things are moving forward at a rapid pace: In close coordination with the city and its economic development agency, the transformation is being driven forward—as part of a holistic neighborhood development plan for Aachen-Rothe Erde.

MAKING ROOM

In the northern part of the site, the first warehouses are being demolished because they are no longer usable due to contamination. Work will begin by the end of 2026, or early 2027 at the latest, to make room for manufacturing.

BRINGING IT TO LIFE

Last year, the RØTHE container village already set the tone; now it is becoming a vibrant hub that draws people to C-Werk with a colorful array of cultural and culinary offerings—featuring a full summer of events.

ENTRANCE

The first renovation will focus on the C-Werk entrance. Building 28—its official name—will become a striking entrance hall featuring offices, co-working spaces, and dining options. It will provide space for conferences, events, and studios—a visible sign of a new beginning. The renovation application has been submitted.

CRAFT COURTYARDS

These are being created in response to a noticeably high demand, also in the northern section. To this end, the existing structures there will be renovated; the building permit application has already been submitted. A revitalization that will create smaller hall spaces with office, communal, and ancillary areas.
