The schedule is set: this year, the Landmarken family will equip more than a dozen buildings with photovoltaic systems, and up to 15 more next year. Stadtmarken New Energy GmbH was founded specifically for this purpose, with a mission to generate solar power in a sustainable and decentralized manner. The first milestone: to generate over two gigawatts of solar power by the end of 2024.

The tenant model of the city brands New Energy

"We have developed a tenant electricity model that is primarily intended to benefit the tenants of the properties on whose roofs the electricity is generated," says André Spott, authorized signatory at Stadtmarken New Energy GmbH. "We have already received a lot of positive feedback from tenants." It could hardly be more sustainable than when renewable electricity is consumed directly on site – and at a favorable price, too. surplus electricity is to be made available to other company-owned buildings via the "green balance group" and fed into the public grid, thus contributing to increasing the share of renewable energy in the general electricity mix.

Innovation and collaboration

In order to operate even more sustainably, the agile and innovative team at Stadtmarken New Energy relies on innovation and collaboration with creative start-ups. For example, it uses cloud-based software for renewable energy supply from the Stuttgart-based start-up Solarize, which not only simplifies the billing of electricity costs. The digital platform allows sustainably generated solar power to be efficiently delivered to any number of tenants in the building and billed accordingly.

"Secure and climate-friendly energy supply is a key issue of our time. That is why we are not only concerned with the local generation of renewable energy, but also with innovative ideas for the delivery, storage, and billing of electricity."

Power generation with battery storage systems

For the energy transition to succeed, increasingly volatile power generation also necessitates battery storage. Here, Stadtmarken New Energy is working with promising start-ups to plan large-scale battery storage facilities that can supply entire neighborhoods such as C-WERK with energy. Such storage systems serve to optimize self-consumption or cap expensive peak loads, but also help to stabilize our heavily strained power grids. The massive expansion of battery storage systems is urgently needed if renewable energy sources such as solar and wind are to continue to be expanded at a rapid pace.
