“SuperFactory” at ecoPARK: This is where the “first percent” is being created

Landmarke No. 34

A 220-million-euro investment, 420 new jobs, and a technology that doesn’t rely on critical raw materials: Skeleton Technologies has opened its “SuperFactory” at ecoPARK Leipzig-West. The world’s largest supercapacitor factory is not only a milestone for Europe’s energy security but also the centerpiece of one of Germany’s most sustainable industrial parks.

An Estonian record-breaking project in Saxony

420 new jobs, a 220-million-euro investment, and a material that contains no critical raw materials: Europe’s energy transition is being driven forward at ecoPARK Leipzig-West. How? Through the Estonian company Skeleton Technologies, which has chosen ecoPARK as the ideal location for its “SuperFactory.” Best of all: there is still space available here.

The world’s largest factory for supercapacitors can produce around twelve million cells each year. It is the largest investment by an Estonian company in Germany.

At the opening last November, Saxony’s Minister President Michael Kretschmer emphasized regarding the project: “We want to become pioneers for the green markets.” And Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal stated that Europe must produce what it needs itself: “This is the first percent; the remaining 99 percent will follow.”

Independence through "Curved Graphene"

This is also possible because Skeleton’s supercapacitors, thanks to the patented “Curved Graphene” material, do not require critical raw materials such as lithium, cobalt, or manganese. At the same time, a significant portion of the value chain remains in Europe.

“Our goal is to ensure security of supply in the European power grid,” said Skeleton CEO Taavi Madiberk. This allows operators of AI data centers to reduce their total electricity consumption by up to 44 percent by balancing out peak loads and relieving pressure on the power grid.

Perfect Match: Sustainable Architecture for Green Innovation

“Our new building plays a key role not only in Skeleton’s growth but also in climate protection,” adds Taavi Madiberk. It’s a “perfect match”: a highly sustainable, innovative building for a highly sustainable, innovative technology.

An excellent neighborhood with growth potential

Thanks to heat pumps and solar panels on the rooftops, ecoPARK Leipzig-West—which was constructed with a wooden roof structure—can operate independently of fossil fuels. In addition to Skeleton, the companies Animagus and Schrankhelden also utilize flexible warehouse and office spaces in the DGNB Gold-certified business park. An excellent and sustainable neighborhood where approximately 10,000 m² of space is still available for research, production, and storage.

ecoPARK Gelsenkirchen: Sustainable, collaborative, fully leased

A major success and clear validation of the “ecoPARKS approach”: The e-commerce company Tech & Home Mate has leased the entire warehouse and office space at ecoPARK Gelsenkirchen and has already moved into the approximately 16,000 m². “The full occupancy confirms our approach of developing sustainable and flexible commercial sites in close and trusting cooperation with the cities,” says Wilm Schwarzpaul, managing partner of ecoPARKS GmbH.

ecoPARKS realized the project in partnership with real estate investment and asset manager AEW, which had acquired the approximately 27,000 m² property, including the project development, even before construction began. The ecoPARK was built using a particularly sustainable wood-hybrid construction method and can be operated in a climate-neutral manner. The project was completed at the end of 2025 on a portion of the former Schalke club grounds.
