Interview with Jan Peter Meyer-Kahlen

"The new working environment will be a flagship project."

Landmarke No. 32

The foundation stone has been laid: Together with main tenant Ericsson and Mayor Sibylle Keupen, we celebrated the milestone for our sustainable new office building on Prager Ring in Aachen in April. Completion is scheduled for 2026, when Ericsson Eurolab will move in with around 500 employees.

Jan Peter Meyer-Kahlen is Vice President and Head of ICT Development Center Eurolab at Ericsson. We spoke with him about the innovative work of Eurolab and the upcoming relocation.

What is Ericsson Eurolab and what innovations is your team currently working on?

Ericsson Eurolab is one of the group's key research and development sites. This is where solutions for mobile networks and everything related to these networks are developed. Over the past decades, we have played a decisive role in shaping the future of mobile communications and helped bring all major mobile standards from 2G to 5G to market. Our employees develop global solutions for communication networks and work on the latest 5G and now also 6G versions of mobile communications technologies, as well as in the application fields of Industry 4.0, transportation, and energy.

Please tell us about your team. What professions are represented there?

Ericsson Eurolab is the professional home for around 500 highly qualified employees. We have people from more than 50 nations at the site who conduct research and work together here. They are experts in software development, network integration, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, machine learning, smart manufacturing, and the Internet of Things (IoT), to name just a few.

Why did you choose Aachen as your location?

Our location in neighboring Herzogenrath is already impressive due to its location in the heart of Europe and its proximity to the excellent RWTH Aachen University. This proximity is very important to us as a research-based company. In order to remain attractive in the future, we looked for an even more urban location closer to the city with good transport links and found it at Landmarken.

What are the reasons why you have now decided on the new construction project on Prager Ring?

Successful research and development means collaboration, even across departmental boundaries. Hybrid working and flexibility in collaboration are essential for Eurolab. In the old building, which offers a now outdated workplace architecture, this is only possible to a limited extent. The new landmark building allows us to offer spaces where employees can come together flexibly.

We work in a highly dynamic environment where requirements are constantly evolving. This means developing new ideas and cultivating a corporate culture that is characterized by a spirit of innovation. That is why it is essential for us that our spaces are modern, flexible, stimulating, and collaborative. Eurolab's new working environment will be a flagship project for new hybrid workplace models within the Ericsson Group.

Discussions with Landmarken about a possible move had been going on for some time. How was the collaboration?

We need partners who understand us. As a Swedish group, it is part of our core identity that we value democratic processes that involve our employees, even if this sometimes takes a little longer. Landmarken is very interested in understanding who we are and what we want. That's what made the collaboration so constructive and produced a result that is absolutely beneficial for us.

The move is planned for 2026. What are you particularly looking forward to?

I'm just looking forward to taking the next step. We are moving into a new, sustainable building that offers modern, state-of-the-art workspaces. The proximity to the city center, the many opportunities for collaboration, but also the beautiful meeting places such as our green roof terrace – it will simply be a huge improvement!

The project – Working environments on Prager Ring

Designed by pbs architekten, the landmark new building will offer modern office environments that cater to the diverse needs and preferences of employees and enable efficient collaboration.

As the main tenant, Ericsson will occupy more than 60 percent of the nearly 9,000 m² of space. Approximately 3,400 m² are still available for other users. The project is being realized with regional expertise by the Schlun construction group.
