With great participation in the urban neighborhood
An important step toward new living space: This fall, the public disclosure for our development of the Singer site can take place. This was decided by the urban development committee in Würselen before the summer break.
"We are very pleased about the confidence shown by politicians and the city," says Dr. Friederike Fugmann, Head of Neighborhood Development at Landmarken, praising in particular the good cooperation with the administration. "We are optimistic that the development plan will be approved next year and that we will then be able to start preparing for the construction work."
This optimism is also fueled by the many positive reactions from the neighborhood. But where do these come from? "We initiated a high level of participation that went far beyond the prescribed minimum," says Friederike Fugmann. Starting with a postcard campaign to survey the immediate neighbors, several information and participation formats were organized on the property itself, including the Wandelbar (see info text). There was an evening discussion for local business owners as well as a separate event for children and young people. As part of the dialogue-based workshop process, citizens were also invited to submit their wishes and suggestions, which were taken up by the participating offices. Some of these can also be found in the winning design by Molestina Architekten.
But that's not all. For the first time, we also tested a digital participation tool—with resounding success. "Senf" is the name of the participation platform created by a young start-up that allows everyone to "add their two cents" and have a say online. Friederike Fugmann explains why this was also a huge step for the Singer site: "With Senf, we managed to reach young adults for the first time." Well over a hundred people took part in the Senf survey – for more than 80 percent of them, it was their first time participating. "It has proven true that adding a digital tool to our toolbox can significantly expand the circle of those who participate," says Friederike Fugmann, adding: "You can really see that this project moves people. That's exactly why I enjoy doing it – because it has a real impact."
we are delighted that the development of the Singer site has now gained momentum and that Landmarken is just as committed to the project as the city. The positive response shows how important the project is for Würselen's city center
Heike Ohlmann, Technical Deputy Mayor of the City of Würselen
The project:
On the site of the disused Singer needle factory in Würselen near Aachen, Landmarken is developing a mixed-use, livable neighborhood covering an area of around 29,000 m² in the heart of the city. Up to 26,000 m² of living space for every generation is being created here, along with attractive additional amenities.
This is the Wandelbar:
The Wandelbar is a disused shipping container that has been given a new lease of life by the Landmarken team: as a mobile meeting place, it can be used wherever new projects are emerging. It creates a space for dialogue between neighbors, interested parties, and planners, and enables meetings for participation, coordination, and information directly on the project site.
