Foundation stone laid in Aachen: Future home of Ericsson Eurolab now rising skyward
Ericsson is coming to Aachen and moving into a new building owned by Landmarken AG. On Wednesday, the foundation stone was laid for the new office building, in which Ericsson Eurolab will be the main user of around 5,500 square meters of space. In total, the working environments on Prager Ring cover approximately 9,000 square meters. Completion is scheduled for 2026.
Ericsson Eurolab is moving from neighboring Herzogenrath to Aachen. "The proximity to the excellent RWTH Aachen University is very important to us as a research-based company," says Jan Peter Meyer-Kahlen, Vice President and Head of ICT Development Center Eurolab at Ericsson. "In order to remain attractive in the future, we were looking for an even more urban location closer to the city with good transport links, and we found it at Landmarken." Ericsson Eurolab is the professional home for around 500 highly qualified employees, including experts in software development, network integration, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, machine learning, smart manufacturing, and the Internet of Things (IoT).
Successful research and development means collaboration, even across departmental boundaries, Meyer-Kahlen continues: "Hybrid working and flexibility in collaboration are essential for Eurolab. The new landmark building allows us to offer spaces where employees can come together flexibly. We develop new ideas and cultivate a corporate culture that is characterized by a spirit of innovation. That is why it is crucial for us that our spaces are modern, flexible, stimulating, and collaborative. Eurolab's new working environment will be a flagship project for new hybrid workplace models within the Ericsson Group.
The new building will be constructed and equipped in accordance with the latest sustainability standards and ergonomic findings. Efficient energy will be supplied by heat pumps and a solar system on the green roof. The building will provide a modern research and working environment with flexible office space for the new mobile communications research and development center.
"I am delighted about the laying of the foundation stone and Ericsson's decision to continue the strong tradition of industry and innovation in the Aachen-Nord district with the relocation of Eurolab to Prager Ring," says Aachen's mayor Sibylle Keupen. And there are still around 3,300 square meters of flexibly divisible rental space available. Space for other innovative companies that want to offer their employees stimulating and communicative workplaces. Landmarken is aiming for LEED Gold certification for green building for the building, which is being constructed in accordance with the BEG 40 standard.
The project is being realized with a great deal of regional expertise: the design by the Aachen-based firm pbs Architekten is being implemented by the Schlun construction group from Gangelt – in an extremely trusting collaboration, as Hendrik Bettenworth emphasizes: "Trust is the foundation on which every successful construction project stands. It is the invisible glue that binds us together, and I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude for that," says the member of the Landmarken management team responsible for construction. Completion is scheduled for fall 2026.
