Global corporation opts for landmark new building
Ericsson is coming to Aachen and moving into a new building owned by Landmarken AG. The global corporation is relocating its Ericsson Eurolab from neighboring Herzogenrath to the university city and will occupy around 5,500 square meters in the modern new office building. Landmarken plans to start construction on Prager Ring this year, with completion scheduled for 2026.
"Ericsson Eurolab and the Aachen region are home to 500 researchers and developers from 40 countries, both professionally and privately," says Jan Peter Meyer-Kahlen, Vice President and Head of ICT Development Center Eurolab at Ericsson. "Over the past decades, we have played a decisive role in shaping the future of mobile communications and helped bring all important mobile communications standards from 2G to 5G to market. Now we are taking the next step and moving into a new, more sustainable building with state-of-the-art development laboratories and workstations close to the city center."
Eurolab's successful research work is also based on its proximity to RWTH Aachen University and its large talent pool. This is an important location advantage which, in addition to its greater proximity to Aachen city center, facilitates scientific exchange and the recruitment of young talent for the company. At Eurolab, Ericsson has researched and developed numerous technologies that have led to fundamental patents for mobile communications. Today, these form a large part of the technical backbone of our mobile networks. In Aachen, the company will develop new 5G and 6G mobile technologies as well as open CloudRAN and OpenRAN infrastructures.
"We have actually been trying for many years to get Ericsson excited about our working environments, and we are now delighted that our project development at Prager Ring has contributed to this global player's long-term decision to choose Aachen," says Landmarken CEO Jens Kreiterling, who also emphasizes the good cooperation with the city of Aachen and its economic development agency.
The new building, designed by pbs Architekten, will be constructed and equipped in accordance with the latest sustainability standards and ergonomic findings. Efficient energy will be supplied by heat pumps and a solar system on the green roof. The building offers a modern research and working environment with flexible laboratory and office space for the new mobile communications research and development center.
"I am very pleased about this new addition, which strengthens Aachen's position as an attractive IT location where research and development traditionally go hand in hand," says Aachen's mayor Sibylle Keupen. Thomas Hissel, Head of Economic Affairs, agrees: "This is a very positive signal for Aachen as a location for innovation and the result of successful teamwork between Landmarken and the economic development agency." And Dieter M. Begaß, Head of Economic Development, adds: "I am very pleased about the long-term security of the group's location and thus numerous jobs!"
With its spacious roof terrace, large lobby, and green courtyard, the building offers numerous meeting places with a high quality of stay. Employees can use charging stations for electric cars and bicycles and benefit from good transport connections. A packing station, a bike station with repair facilities, and showers on the ground floor offer employees convenient extras.
The working environments at Prager Ring cover a total area of approximately 9,000 square meters. Around 3,300 square meters of flexibly divisible rental space is still available. Landmarken is aiming for LEED Gold certification for the building.
