The only German project on the shortlist: Quartier Guter Freund nominated for the ULI Europe Award for Excellence
Aachen. Already a huge success: as a showcase project for socially responsible and sustainable project development, the "Guter Freund" residential quarter in Aachen is also becoming an international role model.
The landmark project has now been nominated for the ULI Europe Award for Excellence by an international jury. Projects from across the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) were eligible for selection. As ULI Europe announced on Monday, "Guter Freund" is the only German nominee on the shortlist.
The competition includes projects from London, Amsterdam, Johannesburg, Brussels, and Florence, among others. "It was fantastic to see how many different projects exceeded expectations of what can be achieved with carefully thought-out real estate initiatives," said Giancarlo Scotti, chair of the jury for the ULI Europe Awards for Excellence 2020. "The ten finalists are leaders in their respective categories and set an exemplary standard. It was a difficult but enjoyable process to evaluate all the projects submitted and narrow them down to a shortlist."
The Urban Land Institute (ULI) is a non-profit research and educational institution and one of the world's most renowned organizations in the real estate industry. The ULI Europe Awards for Excellence recognize outstanding development efforts in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa in the private, public, and non-profit sectors. Due to the coronavirus crisis, a date for the decision and award ceremony has yet to be set.
With 248 apartments on a site measuring approximately 15,500 square meters – more than 70 percent of which are publicly subsidized – "Guter Freund" is one of the largest projects of its kind in North Rhine-Westphalia. Described as an "exemplary concept that can serve as a prototype for many other locations throughout Germany," it was honored as the best German new construction project development at the beginning of the year with the 2020 immobilienmanager Award. in 2016, even before the foundation stone was laid, the landmark project received the polis Award for Urban Land Recycling.
