polis Awards 2021: Silver for the Neue Höfe Herne!
A lasting contribution to revitalizing the city center: Our Neue Höfe Herne project has won the silver polis Award! The landmark project was honored by the distinguished jury as a symbol of change and the future of Herne.
We have transformed the former Hertie department store in Herne into a modern mixed-use property. Offices, restaurants, retail outlets, and a fitness studio have turned the long-vacant building back into a meeting place in the city center. We are very proud that the jury of the polis Awards recognized our team's achievement in the Reactivated Centers category.
With the concept "Neue Höfe Herne," Landmarken AG, together with HPP Architects, won the urban competition for the development of the former Hertie department store in 2016. After acquiring the commercial building, which had been unused since 2009 and had a typical department store structure, the conversion into a future-proof property began. To this end, efficient floor plan structures were created in consultation with the monument protection authorities. To bring light into the spaces, two light wells were cut into the building from above and new window openings and windows were installed.
The conversion is almost complete and most of the space has been leased. The goal of achieving a real impact on the urban community and making a sustainable contribution to the upgrading of Herne's city center has been achieved.
The polis Award for Urban and Project Development recognizes projects that contribute to the public good of a city. It honors courage and creativity in opening up new avenues for solutions. There were more than 150 entries in seven categories for one of the coveted awards. Congratulations to the winner of the category, the House of Bavarian History in Regensburg, as well as to "Kalle Neukölln" in Berlin in third place, also a revitalization of an abandoned warehouse. We also congratulate the winners and runners-up in the other categories of the polis Award!
