Into the future at the speed of light
With 16 research clusters and an investment volume of €2 billion, one of Europe's largest technology-oriented campus areas is being created on an area of 800,000 m² at RWTH Aachen University, enabling a completely new form of cooperation between research and industry.
The first building complex of the photonics cluster has been built in the immediate vicinity of the Chair of Laser Technology and the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology. Here, new methods for generating, shaping, and using light as a tool in production are being researched and developed in 7,000 m² of office and laboratory space.
The design by the internationally renowned architectural firm Kohn Pederson Fox Associates (KPF) allows for the creative integration of the theme of light in both the interior and exterior spaces. The atrium, the heart of the building, brings light into the center of the research building, and the facades can be individually designed with lighting effects.
Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Reinhart Poprawe, Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT and head of the Photonics Cluster: "The idea of the Photonics Cluster and its implementation by the specially designed building are the key to a groundbreaking form of cooperation between science and industry. With Landmarken AG, we have gained an investor and project developer as a partner who shares our vision. designed building are the key to a groundbreaking form of cooperation between science and industry. The property, which was awarded the FIABCI Prix d'Excellence in silver, was sold to PATRIZIA Immobilien AG.
