A New Approach to School Construction

With our comprehensive expertise in educational facilities and neighborhood development, we are the ideal partner for connecting schools and neighborhoods. We are convinced that our innovative spatial concepts will make a sustainable contribution to a future worth living. That is why we design educational buildings to be flexible in use.

Especially in times of ambitious climate goals and scarce resources, it is important to configure the building in such a way that the majority of its space allows for multiple uses, filling the school building with life even outside of regular school hours. Our vision is to create a spatial program that offers the ideal setting for every form of learning, every after-school program, and the open all-day school model—while also generating social and economic benefits.

Our concepts not only enable the use of the school building outside of regular school hours but also allow for hybrid uses. For example, a supermarket could be integrated on the ground floor or student apartments on the upper floors. But the school building can be utilized for more than just a real estate asset. We believe that education, combined with community life, social programs, events, or the cultural and creative industries, can create a space that is also used outside of regular school hours. Our concepts aim to create and foster this space.

Growing Need for New School Buildings

Germany’s educational infrastructure faces major challenges. In recent decades, only a fraction of the necessary investment in renovations has been made, leading to dilapidated facilities and an outdated layout. As a result, schools can only meet modern requirements to a limited extent. At the same time, the number of students is expected to rise by about one million by 2030, creating an additional need for new schools. According to KfW, the investment needed in the municipal sector alone amounts to 40 to 50 billion euros over the next five to ten years.

However, given the backlog of renovations, limited budgetary resources, and staff shortages, many municipalities are unable to meet the urgent need for school development. This is where Landmarken comes in. We are developers of the cities of the future and contribute our expertise and know-how to meet the demand for new school buildings.

That's why we're developing the schools of tomorrow

Experience with educational buildings

In Landmarken, they are often an integral part of the landscape: our daycare centers, which offer the best physical conditions for all approaches to early childhood education and care. In the field of higher education and research facilities as well as campus developments, we are among the leading project developers in Germany. With multi-use buildings for conferences, seminars, and lectures, as well as workshops, research halls, and laboratories, we create space for growth. Our many years of experience in developing learning spaces and a robust network of planning and implementation partners enable us to act decisively, efficiently, and quickly.

Creating Added Value

As Landmarken, we are committed to making cities better and more livable. Social value is created through the development of environmentally sustainable, vibrant places and the harmonious integration of the people we inspire and motivate. Our work shapes a place for decades to come. That is why it is in our DNA to create vibrant Landmarken that serve the city and its people in the best possible way. This is how we achieve a positive impact. We measure success not only in terms of financial returns, but also in the number of learning spaces created, the satisfaction and well-being of students and teachers, a carbon footprint that is as low as possible, and a positive impact on the neighborhood.

Trust Among Public Users

As a partner to cities, Landmarken has earned the trust of many municipalities and public sector clients. Whether in Düsseldorf, Herne, Münster, Bonn, or Dortmund—these and many other cities have chosen Landmarken developments in urban planning competitions and investor selection processes. Public sector tenants such as the North Rhine-Westphalia State Tax Administration, various job centers, health insurance companies, and workers’ compensation associations also rely on Landmarken’s quality as tenants.
